How DOKU Became the Most Visible Payment Gateway in Indonesian Search

DOKU is one of Indonesia's established payment gateways. In the middle of 2025 its search presence told a smaller story than its standing in the market. On the queries a business types when it goes looking for a payment provider, younger competitors were ranking above it.

Between June 2025 and January 2026, Search Agency repaired the site's technical foundation and built depth across the four categories that bring DOKU its merchants. Monthly organic clicks rose 159%. Impressions more than quadrupled. By January the brand held more Top 3 rankings than any other payment gateway in the country.

Where DOKU stood in June 2025

For a long time the site had drawn about 22,900 organic clicks a month from 1.77 million impressions. A full technical audit explained the ceiling. Fifteen open issues ran across the main site and the blog: wrong status codes, a misconfigured robots file, canonical conflicts, structured data missing from some templates and duplicated in others, and pages carrying more than one H1. Taken together, these small faults sent Google a muddled picture of content that was otherwise sound.

AI search showed the same shape. Across payment-gateway prompts on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, DOKU held 13% share of voice, behind Midtrans at 16% and Xendit at 15%. Its average position in those answers was 3.4. About seven in ten of its mentions carried a favorable tone. The models recognized DOKU and placed it third.

Fixing what the crawlers could not read

Technical work came first, because an article published onto a broken template inherits the template's problem. We cleared the audit backlog steadily through the second half of 2025.

The last of the high-impact fixes landed in late November 2025. Breadcrumb schema was corrected, canonical tags were resolved and the duplicate H1 came out of the page templates. Every headline metric rose over the two months that followed.

Building depth in the categories that bring merchants

Alongside the repairs we applied Topic Ownership Strategy to the four themes that map onto DOKU's business: payment gateway, remittance, wallet and business tips. Publishing broadly would have spread the site thin across all of them. Depth inside each pillar is what makes a brand read as a subject-matter authority to a crawler and to a language model.

The campaign produced close to 300 briefed articles and refreshed pages that had been sitting without traffic since they went live. Every high-intent piece carried a structured question-and-answer section, which is the shape AI Overviews and featured snippets lift from. Distribution ran in parallel: 78 creative assets for social and 64 media placements, a third more than the plan called for.

The results by January 2026

Monthly impressions climbed from 1.77 million to 7.6 million. Clicks grew from about 22,900 to roughly 59,000 a month while page-one rankings more than doubled. Product pages are the ones closest to a signed merchant. Their clicks grew by more than 400%.

Where the category rankings moved

The category-level numbers matter most. These are the terms a business searches while it is choosing a provider. In payment gateway, DOKU's Top 3 rankings went from 13 to 31. Remittance had barely been touched before the campaign. Its Top 3 count grew from one keyword to four. Positions four to ten went from a single keyword to thirteen. Wallet and business tips strengthened over the same months, which left DOKU with a footprint in every pillar.

Leading a category that was shrinking

By January 2026 DOKU led its direct competitors on the rankings that carry the most commercial value. It held 1,508 keywords in the Top 3 and 56,943 SERP feature instances against Midtrans at 3,734. The wider category lost traffic in January. Midtrans fell almost 30% and the other gateways dropped by double digits. DOKU moved less than 3%. DOKU was the only brand in the set to grow its keyword footprint over the period. Its bounce rate of 41% was the lowest in the group, a sign that the content answered what people came for.

What this means for AI answers

The work that lifted DOKU in Google also positions it for AI search. Assistants and AI Overviews build answers from sources they can verify and favor a site that covers a subject end to end. The depth DOKU now has in payment gateway and remittance is the kind of coverage that earns a citation when someone asks an assistant how to choose a provider in Indonesia. We have watched the same pattern in Google's AI Mode across Indonesian banking queries, where the cited brands are the ones that published the full answer.
